Empire Excavation NYC works Riverdale's hillside lots — drainage, retaining walls, and foundation excavation for the northwest Bronx's larger residential properties. Free estimates.
Hillside Lots Demand Engineered Digging
Riverdale and Fieldston don't look like the rest of the Bronx, and they don't dig like it either. The northwest Bronx is hills — sloped lots along Palisade Avenue, Independence Avenue and the streets above the Hudson, where a level building pad has to be carved out of a grade that drops twenty feet across the lot. This is cut-and-fill excavation with real engineering: benching into the slope, retaining structures, and drainage designed before the first bucket moves.
The subsurface adds its own challenge. Shallow bedrock and boulder-heavy glacial till are common across the northwest Bronx — standard digging stops fast, and hydraulic breakers take over. We price rock honestly at the estimate stage, after probing, so the number you sign reflects the ground you're actually building on.
Drainage and Retaining Walls
On a hillside lot, water is the long-term enemy and excavation is where the battle is won or lost. Every Riverdale dig we do is planned around water management:
- Retaining-wall excavation. Cutting the bench and footing trenches for segmental, poured concrete or stone retaining walls — the structures that hold hillside lots together.
- Foundation drainage. Perimeter drains, curtain drains and daylighted outlets installed during the foundation dig, when they're cheap — not after the first flooded spring.
- Surface grading. Re-grading slopes so runoff moves away from foundations instead of into them.
- Erosion control. Stabilizing disturbed slopes during construction so a heavy rain doesn't send your lot downhill.
Larger Properties, Different Logistics
Riverdale's detached homes and larger parcels are a genuine advantage for excavation: real driveway access, room to stage equipment, and space to stockpile and sort spoil instead of trucking every load the same day. That access means full-size machines, faster production and lower per-yard costs than a tight Brooklyn lot — as long as the contractor plans the slope work properly. Where access narrows — steep driveways, mature trees to protect, shared private streets in Fieldston — we scale the equipment and sequence accordingly.
Common Riverdale Projects
- Foundation excavation — new homes and additions on sloped lots, with shoring and DOB permits.
- Retaining-wall and drainage excavation — benching, footing trenches and full drainage systems.
- Slope re-grading — correcting grades that send water toward the house.
- Utility trenches — water, sewer, gas and electric on larger parcels.
