Residential Teardowns and New Multi-Family Builds
Flushing is in the middle of a rebuild cycle: older single-family homes coming down and two- and three-family buildings going up in their place, plus new multi-family construction along Main Street, Kissena Boulevard and the corridors feeding downtown Flushing. For excavation, that means two recurring project types — teardown site prep and new foundation digs — often on the same lot in the same mobilization.
We handle the full sequence: demolition of the existing structure, removal of the old foundation and any buried surprises (cesspools and old septic systems are still common in parts of Flushing), then the new foundation excavation to the engineer's grades with DOB permits and inspections coordinated. One contractor for the whole below-grade scope keeps the schedule tight and the blame lines clear.
Flushing Soil and Utility Realities
Much of Flushing sits on glacial soils — sandy outwash that digs easily but needs proper trench shoring, with clay pockets in spots and a water table that shows up in deeper cuts. The utility side is where Flushing projects get interesting:
- House sewer replacements. Older homes often need new sewer connections to the city system, with DEP permits and inspections — separate from DOB excavation permits.
- Cesspool and septic conversions. Legacy cesspools have to be properly abandoned when a property connects to city sewer. We excavate, pump out and backfill to code.
- Water service upgrades. Multi-family conversions usually need larger water services, which means trenching from the main to the building with DOT sidewalk permits.
- Buried surprises. Old foundations from previous structures, rubble fill and undocumented utilities are routine on teardown lots. We probe before we price.
Common Flushing Projects
- Residential teardown and site prep — demolition, old-foundation removal and rough grading in one mobilization.
- New single- and multi-family foundations — full digs with DOB permits, shoring and inspections.
- Sewer and water trenches — house sewer replacements and service upgrades with DEP coordination.
- Grading and drainage — re-grading lots away from new foundations.
