Excavation Contractor Long Island City

Empire Excavation NYC works Long Island City's commercial sites — high-rise-adjacent digs, tight-corridor staging, and DOB-compliant excavation in Queens' fastest-built neighborhood.

Commercial Sites in a Vertical Neighborhood

Long Island City went from warehouses to towers in two decades, and the excavation work followed: mid-rise and high-rise foundations, commercial podium digs, below-grade parking excavation, and utility work feeding new development along Queens Plaza, Court Square, Vernon Boulevard and the East River waterfront. These are general-contractor-driven projects with real schedules, real engineers and zero tolerance for a dig crew that improvises.

We work the way commercial GCs need: to the engineer's grades, coordinated with shoring and dewatering plans, with daily production that keeps the foundation contractor on schedule. Deep cuts near the river mean water management from day one — we dewater properly and keep subgrades stable so concrete pours happen on dry ground.

Staging in Tight Corridors

The defining logistics challenge of LIC excavation is space. Sites sit between active sidewalks, MTA infrastructure, and streets that can't be closed casually. Equipment and trucks have to be staged in corridors barely wider than the machines:

  • Sidewalk and street staging — coordinated with DOT permits for sidewalk sheds, lane closures and material storage.
  • Just-in-time trucking — spoil can't pile up on an LIC site, so haul-off runs on a scheduled rotation matched to dig production.
  • Compact and full-size fleet mix — the right machine for each cut, not whatever was already on the trailer.
  • Night and weekend coordination — when the corridor only works outside business hours, we schedule around it.

High-Rise-Adjacent Work

Digging next to a tower — or underpinning an older low-rise between new towers — is the highest-stakes excavation in Queens. Adjacent structures need protection plans, vibration and settlement monitoring, and excavation sequenced so neighboring foundations are never unsupported. We run this work under the engineer's sequence with shoring installed as we go, and we keep sites clean and complaint-free in neighborhoods where 311 calls happen fast.

MTA-adjacent sites add another layer: work near elevated structures or subway infrastructure follows agency coordination requirements that have to be built into the schedule before the first bucket hits the ground.

Common Long Island City Projects

LIC permit note: Structural excavation here means DOB excavation permits, shoring and bracing plans, and often special inspections — plus DOT permits for every sidewalk and street impact. We identify the full permit stack at the estimate. See our NYC DOB excavation permit guide.
