Excavation FAQs — Brooklyn, NY
These are the questions Empire Excavation NYC hears most from New York City homeowners and property managers about excavation — pricing, permits, timelines, and how the work actually goes. Short answers here; the linked service and cost pages go deeper. If your question isn't covered, call (347) 620-1227 and ask us directly.
How much does excavation cost in NYC?
Residential excavation in NYC typically runs $50–$150 per cubic yard for straightforward digging, but access drives the real number — a rear-yard dig with hand-carried spoil can cost several times a machine-accessible dig. Full basement dig-outs commonly land between $30,000 and $90,000 depending on depth, underpinning, and disposal. Every quote follows a free site visit and is fixed in writing.
Do I need a permit to excavate in New York City?
Most structural excavation — foundation work, basement lowering, anything near a property line or a neighbor's footing — requires NYC DOB permits and often an engineer or architect's filed plans. Shallow landscaping grading may not. We tell you at the site visit exactly which filings your job needs and coordinate with your design professional.
What is underpinning, and will my project need it?
Underpinning strengthens or deepens an existing foundation, usually in sections (pins) poured one at a time. If you are digging below the level of your current footings — or close to a neighbor's — underpinning is very likely required, and NYC code takes it seriously. It is often the largest single line item on a dig-out, which is why we price it explicitly in the quote instead of burying it.
How do you excavate where a machine cannot fit?
Tight-access work is routine in Brooklyn: mini-excavators through 36-inch openings, conveyor systems that move spoil over and out instead of through the house, and hand digging where utilities or landmark fabric demand it. It is slower than open digging, and our quotes say so honestly rather than pretending otherwise.
Who handles the dirt and debris?
We do. Spoil removal, trucking, and legal disposal are included in every quote, along with any required soil testing when the site history calls for it. You will never be left with a yard full of fill and a phone number.
How long does a typical excavation project take?
A utility trench: days. A foundation dig for an extension: one to three weeks. A full basement dig-out with underpinning: four to ten weeks depending on pins, inspections, and weather. Your quote includes a schedule with inspection hold points marked, so you know what can and cannot be rushed.
